Dear Parents/Carers of Year 1,
RE: Year 1 Summer 1 Curriculum Letter – What’s growing in my garden?’
We hope that you have all had a wonderful break. Our learning journey topic this term is ‘What’s growing in my garden?’ The children will be learning about the basic structure of a variety of common flowering plants, including trees. The children will identify and name a variety of common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees.
English
This term our learning will be based around the texts ‘Jack and The Beanstalk’ By Claire Miles and ‘Julian is a Mermaid’ by Jessica Love. Our focus continues to be writing coherent sentences using capital letters and full stops. They will be creating their own narrative using these texts as well as writing instructions on how to grow a beanstalk.
Maths
The focus in Maths this term is place value within 100. Children will begin to skip count in tens, count confidently in ones to 50, compare numbers, identify and notice patterns, and identify relationships between sets of numbers.
DT
This term the children will be focusing on textiles to create their own puppets and explore different techniques to join materials.
Reading
We would really appreciate your continued support with children’s reading at home. Reading at home with your child every day will enable them to make as much progress as possible before the end of Year 1. Children need to continue to bring their book bags to school every day. The books are changed on a Wednesday and the new books will be handed out on the Friday.
PE – Thursdays
Please send your child to school wearing their PE kit every Thursday. This term PE will be outside. School PE kit consists of trainers or plimsoles, plain black or grey shorts/trousers, a white T-shirt and their red school jumper. Please do not send your child into school wearing football shirts or other non-uniform clothing.
We will also have PE on the following Tuesdays:
Tuesday 28th April
Tuesday 12th May
Thank you in advance for your continued support.
Year 1 Team
