Dear Parents/Carers of Year 2,
RE: Year 2 Summer 1 Curriculum Letter – Near and Far
Welcome back to school. We hope that you all had a lovely Easter holiday and enjoyed the sunshine. Our learning journey topic this term is ‘Near and Far’ and has a geography focus. The children will be investigating and comparing two contrasting localities: London, UK and Mombasa in Kenya. If you have a globe or atlas at home, you could help your child to understand the differences and similarities between the two locations. You might be able to find some useful videos or photos (including aerial photos) on the internet that could help too.
Our two core texts in English this half term will be, ‘Lila and the Secret of Rain’ by David Conway and ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ by Maurice Sendak.
Reading
We really appreciate your continued support with children’s reading at home. Reading at home with your child every day will enable them to make as much progress as possible before the end of Year 2.
Books and reading records should be brought to school every day. Reading records and Fluency books will be collected on Mondays and all other reading books on Thursdays. New books will be sent home on Fridays. New books cannot be sent home until the old ones have been returned.
PE
PE for Year 2 will be on every other Monday and every Friday from now on. Children are to come to school in their full PE kits. This includes a plain white shirt, dark bottoms and trainers. Please ensure that children are wearing the correct shoes or they will not be able to take part.

Week 2 Friday 24th April
Week 3 Monday 27th April and Friday 1st May
Week 4 Friday 8th May
Week 5 Monday 11th May and Friday 15th May
Week 6 Friday 22nd May
Mathletics homework
This half term, we will continue our unit on multiplication and division introducing money. Children can access these using the Mathletics website. Children’s logins are printed in their reading records. If you need support accessing the platform or need the login details re-printed, please speak to your child’s class teacher.
Project home work:
We have provided the children with a plant diary and a potted seed each. Their job is to water the seed so that it germinates and then look after their plant and watch it grow over the two-week holidays and throughout next term. We would like their plants to get a head start over the holidays so that we can talk about the growth and changes during our Soil, Seeds & Sunshine topic. Please encourage your child to complete their plant diary once a week. If you would like to share photos of your child’s plant’s growth, please email them to year2@kelvingrove.lewisham.sch.uk.
Other reminders
Please remember, children are encouraged to bring in reusable water bottles with their names clearly labelled.
Thank you in advance for your continued support.
The Year 2 Team
