Dear Year 6 parents and carers,
RE: Year 6 Summer 1 Curriculum Letter – Shocks and Scares!
We hope that your children have had a relaxing and restful Easter break and are ready for a busy and productive summer term.
As you are aware, the children have been working extremely hard towards their SATs. Every school day between now and then is vital and we appreciate your support in ensuring that your child is in school every day and on time. Below is the timetable of tests that the children will be sitting. All tests will start immediately after morning registration. These dates and times have been set nationally and cannot be changed for individual schools or pupils; therefore, all Year 6 children need to be present during this week and on time.
Monday 11th May 2026 – Grammar Paper and Spelling Paper
Tuesday 12th May 2026 – Reading Paper
Wednesday 13th May 2026 – Maths Arithmetic Paper 1 & Maths Reasoning Paper 2
Thursday 14th May 2026 – Maths Reasoning Paper 3
Curriculum:
Our topic this term is called ‘Shocks and Scares!’, with a focus on suspense writing in English and Electricity as our Science learning. Below is our mind map which shows all the learning that will be covered this term.

PE Lessons:
PE lessons will be on PPA days (Monday 20th April and 18th May). In addition to this, Brass and Copper will be doing PE lessons every Thursday; Bronze will be doing PE every Friday.
On PE days, children may come to school in their PE uniform which consists of their red Kelvin Grove school jumper or cardigan, a plain white t-shirt (round neck or polo), grey or black tracksuit bottoms and trainers.
Morning Breaktime Snacks:
We would like to take this opportunity to remind parents/carers that Kelvin Grove is a ‘Healthy School’ and we strongly encourage children to bring a nutritious snack (nut free!) for morning break so they have the opportunity to eat something that will sustain them until lunchtime. We appreciate your support with ensuring that your children have something healthy to eat at school.
SATs Week (Monday 11th May – Thursday 14th May)
Children will be invited into school for 8.30am and a light snack will be provided for them. It is important that the children are punctual during SATs week to allow them to settle for the assessments. More information regarding this will be sent closer to the time.
Home Learning
This term, we would like the children to focus on revision in preparation for the SATs. We will be setting Mathletics homework on a Friday- this is a great tool for revision and revisiting any topics that children have found tricky. We also want children to have the opportunity to work on what they feel will benefit them so they can now work through any remaining pages in their Maths CGP books.
Reading with your child and discussing what has been read each day is essential to helping them make progress and will support their stamina for the upcoming SATS reading paper. The expectation is that your child reads for at least 15-20 minutes each evening and that they record this in their planner.
If you have any questions about anything, please don’t hesitate to ask your child’s class teacher.
Thank you.
