Dear Parents and Carers of Year 3 pupils,
Re: Year 3 Summer 2 Curriculum Letter – South America
Welcome back!
Our topic this term is a Geography topic on South America. In English, we will be looking at the Zebra’s Great Escape and The Barnabus Project and in Whole Class Reading we will be enjoying Mr Penguin and the Lost Treasure. In Maths, we will be learning more about fractions, measurement, and time. Our focus in Science this term is the Physics topic of Forces and Magnets. In DT, we’ll be developing our sewing skills, where the children will be planning, designing, making and evaluating cushions. Children will be learning about Hinduism in RE. Please see our curriculum mind map on the school website for further information on our Learning Journey.
P.E. Lessons
On PE days, your child will be wearing their PE kits all day so please ensure they have the appropriate kit (white T-shirt, grey/black bottoms and their red school jumper), including trainers/plimsols every Friday.
They have additional PE on PPA days every other week. These dates are: Tuesday 9th June, Tuesday 23rd June, Tuesday 7th July.
Sports Day 2026
Year 3 Sports day will be held on Monday 22nd June, a separate letter will be sent out confirming further details and exact timings.
Uniform
Encourage your child to wear full school uniform and ensure they have a coat appropriate for the weather. It is important that your child does not wear jewellery (unless it is for religious reasons) apart from stud earrings. Please ensure their coats and jumpers are labelled with their names. This helps us reunite misplaced items with their owners.
Home Learning:
Daily Reading
Children will choose a book to take home each week. They can also read books they already have at home or from their local library. Reading is essential to help your child make progress in all areas of the curriculum. We would like children to read at home each day. It is best for an adult to check how they’re getting on, either by listening to them read or by asking them questions to check their understanding. This will help your child make progress with their reading. Please do make a note in their reading journals regularly. It makes us aware of how much and how well they’re reading and what they’re enjoying. Please put the reading journal back into their book bag after writing in it as it is handy to have them in school each day. Books will be changed weekly:
Emerald: Thursday
Jade: Friday
Maths
In Maths, children have logins to TTRS (Times Table Rock Stars) and Mathletics. Mathletics tasks are set each week. TTRS is progressive and children will make progress the more often they play. Children will start to have regular times table tests: they are very motivated, please help them practice! If you would like another copy of the login, please let us know.
Spellings
Children will continue to have spellings to learn at home this half term. They will be tested on each week’s spellings the following Monday. Please help your child practice at home.
Home learning projects
Please see further details below for our home learning project for this half term. Please send in any completed projects into school in the w/c Monday 6th July so that we can celebrate and enjoy them!
Other information
Please ensure your child brings a coat and a filled and labelled water bottle to school each day.
Thank you for all your support and, as always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
