Dear Year 5 Parents and Carers.
RE: Year 5 Summer 2 Curriculum, ‘Graffiti – Art or Crime?’
We hope you had a restful break and are looking forward to the final term of the year. We have an interesting few weeks ahead of us, with a lot of work and fun to be had! Our Learning Journey topic this term is titled: ‘Graffiti – Art or Crime?’, where we will be focusing much of our learning around local street art in Penge.
P.E. Lessons
Please ensure your child wears the school uniform PE kit and trainers into school on all PE days. PE days are Mondays and PPA Wednesdays (10th June, 24th June and 8th July) and every Wednesday. As we are now in the summer, please check that you child has a refillable named water bottle and clothing suitable for the weather including t-shirt and shorts/leggings when required.

Trips
All Year 5 classes will be going to the Science Museum on Tuesday 30th June, please see the separate letter sent out previously about this.
Year 5 will also have a local trip, walking to Penge to see and sketch Street Art on Friday 3rd July. A separate letter will be sent with further details shortly.
Sports Day 2026
Year 5 Sports day will be held on Monday 22nd June, a separate letter will be sent out confirming further details and exact timings.
Homework
Reading: We encourage your child to read at home on a daily basis. You can check in with your child to continue to support their independent reading by asking your child to read a section aloud to you, asking them to summarise what they have read or discussing themes and vocabulary with them. Each time your child has read, they must record this in their Reading Record Book which you should monitor. The Reading Record Book gives us an indication of how your child is engaging with reading – it is our expectation that children bring their Reading Record to school every day. It is important to continue to develop your child’s reading stamina as they are in upper key stage 2 and are frequently required to read longer and more complexed text. This will also be the case next year as they prepare for Y6 SATs.
Maths and Spellings: As before, maths homework is set each Monday on Mathletics. This is to be completed by the Monday of the following week. Please continue to practice all times tables and their related division facts frequently. Your child can continue to use TTRS as this is what we also use in school. A spelling rule will be introduced on Mondays, and throughout the week lessons and activities will be completed based on this rule. Over the course of the half term, we will send home a spelling homework to consolidate spelling patterns taught in school.
Topic Project: The challenge this term is to use your design and making skills to choose one of the projects below / overleaf. If required for you home learning, our e-mail is year5@kelvingrove.lewisham.sch.uk. This project needs to be sent to us by Friday 3rd July.
Other information: Please remember the healthy snack for playtime e.g. a piece of fruit or a cereal bar, for snack time. No crisps or chocolate bars please. Also, the snack can NOT contain nuts (this includes Nutella) or seeds. Please encourage your child to wear full school uniform each day, apart from on P.E. days and to keep jewellery to a minimum. Children are only permitted to wear stud earrings and standard watch (no smart watches please).
