Dear Parents and Carers of Year 1,
RE: Y1 Curriculum Letter, Autumn 1 ‘Marvellous Me’
Our learning journey topic this term is ‘Marvellous Me’, where the children will be discussing and talking about ourselves and our families. Below this letter is a mind map showing the learning for this term.
English
This term our learning will be based around the books ‘Hair Love’ by Matthew A Cherry and ‘Little Red’ by Bethan Woollvin. Our focus this term in writing will be using a capital letters and full stop in a sentence. We will also be including Oracy skills in all our learning, where we will be learning how to express our opinions and listen to others.
Maths
The focus in Maths this term is numbers to 10. Children need to be able to count forwards and backwards fluently up to 10. We also look and understand place value up to 10.
Science
This term, the children will be learning about their body and their senses. Each term we will also be exploring seasonal changes.
Reading
We would really appreciate your continued support with children’s reading at home. Reading at home with your child every day will enable them to make as much progress as possible before the end of Year 1. Children need to continue to bring their book bags to school every day. The books get changed on a Wednesday and the new books will be handed out on the Friday. Please remember to look after this reading book and return this to your child’s teacher each week, otherwise we will not be able to give your child a new book.
PE – Every Thursdays
Please send your child to school wearing their PE kit every Thursday. This term PE will be outside. School PE kit consists of trainers or plimsoles (Velcro trainers are ideal), plain black or grey shorts/jogging bottoms, a white T-shirt and their red school jumper. Please do not send your child into school wearing football shirts or other non-uniform clothing. It is important that your child does not wear jewellery (unless it is for religious reasons) apart from stud earrings.
PE kit is also required on alternate Wednesdays on the following dates:
Wednesday 9th September, Wednesday 23rd September, Wednesday 7th October and Wednesday 21st October
Topic Home Learning Project: Topic Home Learning Projects start in Autumn 2, after half term. Each project will be linked to learning from the previous term to give children a chance to revisit and build upon prior learning.
Forest School
Your child is in either group A or group B. Please refer to the separate letter which will be sent out today.
Important Dates:
Parents’ Evening will be held during the week beginning 12th October 2026. Further details will follow from school nearer the time.
Other information:
Please ensure your child brings a filled and labelled water bottle to school each day. We provide fruit every day as a morning snack so you do not need to provide any snacks.
A reminder that children should not bring in toys from home as these can get lost or broken.
As the weather becomes colder, please ensure your child has a warm coat and that all hats, scarves and gloves are named.
Morning drop off is a busy time so we ask that you please speak to your child’s class teacher after dismissal, we are always in the playground until at least 3:25pm. If you are unable to speak to the teacher after school, call or email the school office to arrange a phone conversation or meeting.
We are looking forward to working with you and your child over the course of the year. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
Ms Sousa and Ms Dolerius
Year 1 Team
