Dear Parents and Carers of Year 2,
RE: Y2 Curriculum Letter, Autumn 1 ‘Pole to Pole’
Welcome to Year 2! The children have had an excellent first few days back at school and we have been delighted with their attitude towards their learning. Our learning journey topic this term is ‘Pole to Pole’, where the children will be learning about the human and physical geography of both polar regions and different countries on the equator. In English, we start with looking at an alternative traditional tale in the form of ‘Red in the City’ by Marie Voigt and later move to our focus book ‘The Great Explorer’.
Home Learning
Home learning will consist of a termly project which will be based on the subject we will be teaching during that term. This will begin in Autumn 2. Each project will be linked to learning from the previous term to give children a chance to revisit and build upon prior learning. We will be launching Mathletics in Autumn 2 and more detail will follow.
Reading
At Kelvin Grove, we know that your role is crucial in supporting your children to become confident and fluent readers. Not only this, but your dedication to listening to your children read, and sharing stories with them helps them to develop a lifelong love of books. Every week children will get a Little Wandle or book banded book & ‘free choice’ book corner book.
Books and reading records should be brought to school every day. Reading records and books will be collected on Thursdays, and new books will be sent home on Fridays. New books cannot be sent home until the old ones have been returned.
PE
Please send your child to school wearing their PE kit every Friday.
Year 2 will also have PE on the following Mondays, 7th September, 21st September, 5th October and 19th October.
School PE kit consists of trainers or plimsoles, plain black or grey shorts/jogging bottoms, a white T-shirt and their red school jumper. Please do not send your child into school wearing football shirts or other non-uniform clothing. It is important that your child does not wear jewellery (unless it is for religious reasons) apart from stud earrings.
Important Dates:
Parents’ Evening will be held in w/c 12th October 2026. Further details will follow from school nearer the time.
Other information:
Please ensure your child brings a filled and labelled water bottle to school each day.
A reminder that children should not bring in toys from home as these can get lost or broken.
As the weather becomes colder, please ensure your child has a warm coat and that all hats, scarves and gloves are named. It is important that your child does not wear jewellery (unless it is for religious reasons) apart from stud earrings.
Morning drop off is a busy time so we ask that you please speak to your child’s class teacher after dismissal, we are always in the playground until at least 3:25pm. If you are unable to speak to the teacher after school, call or email the school office to arrange a phone conversation or meeting.
We are looking forward to working with you and your child over the course of the year. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
