Headteacher's Message
In most Secondary schools children can have phones but they are not to be used in any capacity or even taken out and visible during the school day. So “phones in schools” isn’t the real issue. I have thought about this long and hard as a headteacher and have mixed feelings. In the end I don’t believe it is about banning phones, but it is about educating children.
As adults we should present to children behaviours that we expect to see in them, this is how they learn. Nowadays this includes our conduct online. If we want our children to be able to take advantage of all of the opportunities smartphones offer i.e. access to the internet and social media etc, while keeping themselves and others safe, then we must ensure that we model this ourselves.
Please keep an eye on the website and newsletter for all upcoming summer dates. Let’s hope we get some proper sunshine soon.
Sports Days 2024
See the timetable above for the dates of each year group Sports Day this term. Reception and Year 1 will be on site at school and Years 2 – Year 6 will be held at Wells Park. Please see the letter for more details.
School Council
This week was the first International Day of Play, as declared by UNICEF. At Kelvin Grove we acknowledged this by all classes having the opportunity to talk about what play is, what it means to them and specifically what play means at Kelvin Grove.
In our last meeting we discussed World Environment Day and we talked about how we as a school could make decisions which would be better for our school and also better for the environment. Representatives are keen for us to use less plastic and reduce laminating in school. They are also keen to make improvements to the planters on our playgrounds so that these not only help clean the air and act as a barrier between play spaces and the busy road but also a habitat for insects and birds. Year 4 were very proud that they had been on a visit to Devonshire Road Nature Reserve on World Environment Day.
Call for Parents!
Year 3’s topic this term is Windrush and while learning about this they will also be exploring what it means to move and settle into another country. Year 3 are asking if any of our Kelvin Grove families (not just Caribbean) who have migrated from another country to the UK would be willing to share their stories and talk to Year 3.
Please speak to the Year 3 teachers for more information.
General Election 4th July
Make sure you are ready for voting by ensuring you are registered (or applying for your postal vote) and that you have an accepted form of photo ID.
Lost Property
This helps us to return any lost and found items quickly to their rightful owner/s.
Unnamed lost property will be displayed by the pod in the main playground from 8.30 am – 8.45 am and again at 3.15 pm – 3.30 pm on a regular basis. All unclaimed items will be sent to the local charity shop to benefit our wider school community.
Achievements
Congratulations to Rafik in Year 6 has been awarded the Jack Petchey Award! Rafik was nominated by his youth club for the award and will also help them decide how to spend the grant as part of the award. The Achievement Awards are not solely for academic achievement – they may be used to recognise a personal triumph for someone who has faced a challenge, a young person who has pushed themselves outside of their comfort zone or it may be an opportunity to recognise the outstanding efforts of a team player. Jack Petchey Achievement Award winners are young people who have gone above and beyond to achieve. Well done Rafik!
Street Art search
Year 5 ventured out on a local walk through Sydenham and Penge this week finishing up their art project from last term. They have been investigating the fine lines between graffiti and street art, and what turns graffiti into art. Both classes were lucky with lovely sunny weather which meant they also got to do some urban sketching! See their class news for more photos.
World Environment Day
