Headteacher's Message
This spring term has been the shortest I have known but we have packed a lot in, and I am so pleased with the learning across the school.
During the last two weeks of term I will meet with all the teachers and talk to them about the progress of each child. Teachers too are meeting, with groups of children, to talk about their learning in various subjects and to find out more about what helps them learn. Talk plays such an important part of our learning and helps us develop our ability to think and reason.
Next week is Parent’s Evening (Tuesday 26th March and Wednesday 27th March) so please book an appointment to see your childs teacher to talk through the progress your child has made and targets to achieve by the end of the year.
It has felt like spring over the past couple of weeks and the KG Circle have organised our school Spring Festival for Friday 22nd March. Please come along and support their fundraising event.
And finally I’d like to remind you all just how important a smile and friendly ‘hello’ is. It is difficult to turn on the TV, listen to the news and not be upset by scenes of conflict and aggression. Let’s make our KG community a haven of positivity and smiles.
Parents Evening March 2024
We have Parent’s Evenings in the last week of term, Tuesday 26th March and Wednesday 27th March. Appointments can be booked on Scopay. Bookings for this went live on Friday 15th March at 6.00pm. If you are having any trouble with making an appointment please contact the school office admin@kelvingrove.lewisham.sch.uk or 0208 699 6300 and someone will assist you.
World Book Day 2024

World Book Day was non-stop this year! Children came in dressed up in imaginative costumes, brought in their favourite books to talk about and across the school stories were shared and enjoyed. Miss Magee hosted assemblies where whole classes and year groups came together to celebrate their favourite books and characters.

The celebration of reading continued beyond book day with another Book Swap where all children were able to take a book home. Thank you to all the children who donated books to this and a special thank you to Mrs Merzouki for giving her time to organise it.

Year groups have also been hosting Stay and Read sessions, inviting parents and carers into school to enjoy a story or two with their children in class. It was lovely to see so many parents turn up for Reception, Year 1 and Year 3’s sessions. Year 2 are looking forward to welcoming parents and carers on Tuesday 26th March at 9.00am.
See the letter for more information.
Painting Birds!
Thank you to all the children who submitted entries to the Sky Arts and Access All Arts Bird Painting Competition. Wow! You really went the extra mile creating such a variety of different birds. It’s going to be a tough pick for the judges at Sky Arts.
Swimming Gala Splendor
On Friday 8th March 2024, a small group of Y5 & Y6 pupils represented Kelvin Grove in the Lewisham Primary School Swimming Gala. The competition runs once a year due to the hard work and dedication of the staff at Saxon Crown Swimming Club.
The swimmers were Lenny (Y6), Alba F, Alice, Charlie B, Kai , Benjamin and Dylan J (all from Y5). The children had a range of previous experience when it came to racing, but they all had previously demonstrated the ability to swim 100m unassisted in their chosen event. On the day, their behaviour was excellent. They supported each other and showed so much patience during what was a very long afternoon at the pool. They all gave their all in the pool and it was lovely to see how much they enjoyed it. It was incredibly pleasing to see a number of them overcoming nerves and competing so well at such a huge event against many other state and independent Lewisham schools. All the Y5 swimmers set personal best times and between them we had a number of top eight, top ten and top finishes. A special mention goes to Lenny who competed in four events (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly) and was awarded three bronze medals and a silver medal. Congratulations to all those who took part – you’re efforts were tremendous!

Magnificent Manga!
As part of their topic learning this term Year 6 have been delving into to Manga and Anime in art lessons. Year 6 have started off by learning how to draw in the Manga style and creating some of their favourite characters. Don’t they look fab!
Year 6 are all very excited to be visiting the Young V&A Museum this week to see their Myths to Manga exhibition.
Story Time Library Visit

Story Time Plus Club had a wonderful visit to Forest Hill Library, where they were able to explore the books on offer, curl up for some time to read and heard a story read by one of the Library volunteers. It was such a nice visit and the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
Creative Competitions

KG pupils have an excellent track record for wowing us and the judges when it comes to art competitions. We have already had some fantastic and creative entries to the open competitions and there is still plenty of time to enter the last one!
Firstly a thank you to all the children who submitted entries for The Fourth Plinth Schools Awards 2024 our deadline for this was Friday 15th March, we wish everyone good luck!
The last current open competition we are accepting submissions for is the Royal Academy Young Artists Summer Show 2024 children can enter up until Monday 25th March 2024. This is a wonderful opportunity for children to express their creativity and share their artwork, with winners being showcased at the Royal Academy Gallery and online.
Check the link for the full information and details of the Royal Academy’s competition, and if you have any questions, please ask to speak with Miss Gibbs.
