Headteacher's Message
It has been a short but busy term, with plenty taking place across the school. Year 4 have almost completed their swimming lessons, showing real determination and resilience during their intensive two-week programme. Well done to all of Year 4 for their efforts. We are looking forward to welcoming many of you in this week for Parents’ Evening. These meetings are an important opportunity to speak with teachers about your child’s progress and to discuss how you can support their learning at home. Bookings remain open on Scopay, and if you experience any difficulties, please contact the school office who will be happy to assist you in making an appointment.
Attendance continues to be a key focus for us, and we know that strong attendance supports both learning and wellbeing. If your family is experiencing any difficulties and you feel we may be able to help, please do contact the school office to arrange a meeting. We are always keen to work in partnership with families to support our children in every way we can.
This term, we also say goodbye to some valued members of staff. Ms Babs, who has worked within our SEN hub and supported many children in Blue class, has made a lasting impact in helping pupils transition successfully into mainstream learning.
After 14 years at Kelvin Grove, we also say farewell to Miss Magee, our Deputy Headteacher. This is a significant moment for our school community. Miss Magee has played a central role in shaping the direction of the school, not only through her leadership but in the development of our curriculum and the transformation of how we teach reading and writing. Her influence will be felt for many years to come, and we are incredibly grateful for her dedication, commitment and care. We wish her every success as she moves on to inspire schools more widely.
We hope that those families who celebrated Eid recently had a joyful and special time with family and friends.
Attendance Matters
The average attendance in primary schools this year is just below 95% at about 94.7%.
Kelvin Grove attendance in all year groups falls below this.
Attendance | Persistent Absence (Less than 90%) | |
Overall | 93.0% | 24.8% |
Reception | 92.1% | 27.3% |
Year 1 | 92.2% | 29.3% |
Year 2 | 93.9% | 22.1% |
Year 3 | 92.3% | 30.0% |
Year 4 | 93.7% | 22.2% |
Year 5 | 92.6% | 30.1% |
Year 6 | 93.6% | 16.6% |
The percentage of children who are persistently absent is higher across our school. The national figure for primary schools is below 20%. Persistent absence means that a child has attendance below 90%, missing at least one day in every ten.
Children who are persistently absent have gaps in their learning, which are difficult to catch up and over time this will impact on their sense of belonging, engagement and achievement.
The school has set targets to increase attendance to at least 95% for each year group and to significantly reduce the number of children who are persistently absent.
All parents of children who have attendance below 90% will receive a letter notifying them of this at the beginning of the Summer term.
Please play your part in helping the school raise attendance.
Parents Evening
Parents Evening is on today 3:30pm – 7:00pm and tomorrow 3:30pm – 6:00pm, while bookings are closed on SCOPAY you can still book directly with your child’s class teacher or through the Main School Office.
World Book Day
We had a wonderful time celebrating World Book Day across the school. The day began with paired reading, where older children visited younger classes to share stories together, something everyone always enjoys. We admired some fantastic costumes and creative props inspired by favourite book characters. Miss Hudson and Ms Abey also led assemblies exploring some of our favourite stories and reminding us that there truly is a book for everyone. A big thank you to both teachers for their time and effort organising the ‘A Book A Day Project’, where they read different stories for all year groups each day for a week; catch up on these on the school’s dedicated page here.

What a Hoot!
All classes from Reception to Year 6 had the most incredible experience this week with a visit from Kent Owl Academy. We met three owls and a beautiful kestrel, and it was truly magical to see these magnificent birds up close. We listened to their hoots and chirps, watched in awe as a tawny owl flew across the hall, and some very lucky children even had an owl fly directly to them!
A huge thank you to Mrs Nandhra-Calow and the KG Circle for organising such a special and memorable experience for everyone.
Swimming Gala Success!
Well done to our Year 5 and 6 swimmers who competed in the Lewisham Primary Schools Swimming Gala at Glass Mill Leisure Centre, organised by Saxon Crown Swimming Club. Thirteen swimmers represented our school across a variety of events against other schools in the borough. It was a challenging competition but a fantastic experience for everyone involved. We were especially proud that two of our swimmers, Maria and Shingai, came away with medals in their events. Congratulations to all who took part!
