Headteacher's Message
October 1st marks the beginning of Black History month. Kelvin Grove is proud of its anti-racist stance, how it tackles racism in all forms and is proud of its curriculum, which throughout the year draws upon the rich cultural diversity of our community. Our curriculum is designed to challenge pupils so that they can go on to create and thrive in a diverse world where all races are equal.
Topics such as the slave trade, apartheid and anti-racism form discussion and debate. Literature, art, music, geography, history and science all reflect how people with African heritage have contributed to the world we now live in. We will ensure that Black History Month is celebrated here through assemblies, events, discussion and debate, but we will also ensure that anti-racism, tackling inequality and creating a more equal world in which our children will live remains a high priority throughout the year, every year.
“Proud to Be” is the theme for this year and we will be ensuring that all children are focussed on sharing what and who they are “Proud to Be”.
Achievements
Blake Faucher-Culver is fund raising for The Little Princess Trust. Blake will be donating his hair on Tuesday 19th October so that it can be made into a wig to help a child who is suffering from cancer.
You can donate to the Little Princess Trust through Blake’s JUST GIVING link.
Well done Blake from everyone at Kelvin Grove, we are very proud of you and you certainly have a lot of hair to donate.
Parent Governor Elections
We have two vacancies on our governing body for parent governors. We will be holding a coffee morning with Ian Hyde and our governors to meet you and answer any questions you may have about the role of a parent governor at Kelvin Grove. Come along and find out more on Friday 15th October at 8.45am in the Paxton Hall.
School Council
School Council is coming back.
Do you have a good idea about how we can better establish communities in our school and beyond? If so you might like to join the School Council. Over the next week, children will have the chance to share ideas with their class before discussions take place about who should become an initial member of the School Council this year.
Club News
Our clubs launched this week, with some exciting new activities on offer, as well as old favourites returning. New clubs include Drama (Mr Bates Y5 Y6), Environmental Awareness (Mrs Merzouki Y1 Y2) KG Choir (all years), plus the return of Friday Musical Theatre (Y1 Y2), Street Dance (Y1 Y2 Y3) and Mini Athletics (Y1 Y2).
Our striking range of Football and Multi-Sports clubs are overseen by Mr Bentz (EWTB Coaching) and our new club leader Mr Hattam. Jake Hattam is the Director of ABC Sports Stars, a local based sporting centre (Mountsfield Park) offering holiday camps, Saturday schools, training and events, and much more!
We still have some limited places available so don’t worry your child can still join in on the fun.

Governors' News
From the Governors
We held our first Full Governing Body meeting earlier this week, welcoming our new Community Co-opted Governor; Sarah Cokayne. Sarah brings a wealth of experience from the corporate world and will be a valuable member of the Governing Body.
As a Governing Body we have a strategic view of the whole school. There is lots to get involved in, but we have identified six areas of focus for the coming year. These are:
- Race Equality
- Digital (as part of the wider curriculum)
- Wellbeing
- Parental Engagement
- SEND provision and Inclusion
- Financial resilience
We will report back regularly as to progress in these areas.
Finally, we would like to invite all parents and carers to a coffee morning on 15th October. This will enable people to find out how to get more involved in the school, whether that be through the PTA, Parent Reps or as a Governor. We will be looking for 2 new Parent Governors this term and we would particularly like to welcome parents in BAME groups and of SEND children onto our Governing Body so that it better reflects the diversity of Kelvin Grove. However anyone with the enthusiasm to help develop the school would find this a fulfilling role. Please come along to find out more or email us on governors@kelvingrove.lewisham.sch.uk
