Headteacher's Message
As we come to the end of what has been the most challenging of years I would like to thank you all for your support.
COVID-19 and schools’ finances have brought unprecedented challenges for me as a headteacher but one thing has remained constant and a source of strength, that is our children, your children and their resilience and passion for learning. Supported by a dedicated team of staff and you as parents, they have achieved great things in their learning and in their lives despite everything. Recent assessments across the school demonstrate some fantastic achievement. Phonics data in Year 1 and 2 showed children to be above the National figure from 2019 (the last year data was available) and our Year 6 SATs tests, in exam conditions, have achieved results that are higher that the data from that year with over 30% achieving Greater Depth in reading and 25% achieving Greater Depth in maths. This is testimony to the hard work put in by you, as parents, by the staff team and most of all, by the children.
We will be making some changes to start times in September and extending the school day in the morning by 10 minutes or so. This will allow additional learning time and help with timetabling. The changes will be announced in a letter next week.
We are saying a big ‘thank you’ and ‘goodbye’ to Nicola Fosker (Year 3 teacher) who is moving to the Kent area, Charlie Boustred (Year 1 teacher) who is moving to the South West, Maddie Ingraham (Year 1 teacher) who is moving to the Bristol area, Anna Johnston (teaching assistant) who is going to study at university and last but not least, Lisca Yee (admin assistant) who will be taking a well earning break and coming back to Kelvin Grove to volunteer with us on Tuesdays.
I wish you all a safe and happy summer, with the hope that we can return to something like normal in September.

Library News
Kelvin Grove has worked hard over the last four years to create a library for its pupils. This has involved lots of planning, grant writing, gutting, building and buying. Aside from all the practical things, we also worked hard on supplying the library with quality books for all reading abilities. This was achieved through donations from individuals, publishers and also through funding we received from grants. This effort is ongoing and we are presently aiming to expand our non-fiction, research and reference books section.
We are so happy and proud to announce that at long last the library will be open to all children starting in September. We are therefore recruiting volunteers to work in the library. If you are a parent, grandparent, older sibling or carer that can give up a few hours a week, please get in touch. Volunteers will be fully trained with the library software and have the opportunity to expose children to the joys of books please email Mrs Campbell at this address: kcampbell@kelvingrove.lewisham.sch.uk.
In the meantime I would like to thank all those who have given their time, expertise and knowledge to this cause. From Ian Hyde who conceived the idea of building a library to Katie Campbell and Claire Campbell who have given up so much of their time logging all the books into the system and labelling them. I am also grateful to Katie for working with the local rotary club to secure a donation and for writing countless grants with me. Thanks are also due to Claire Robe (parent) who is a librarian by trade (she worked at the British library)
who helped me sort through thousands of books to categorise them and also to Shakera Rahman, Pete Knight and David Kite. If you have any questions or queries you can contact me on: alex.bourdelon@gmail.com
Governors' News
From the Governors
In our final column of the year we would like to introduce you to our Chair and Vice Chair:
- Eleanor Fairford (Chair): My role is to support Mr Hyde with the strategic leadership of the school and chair the governing body meetings, ensuring that we support the school to help all pupils achieve their potential.
- Paula McDonald (Vice Chair): I contribute skills and experience in strategy, organisation change and governance and youth and children’s services, drawn from other youth organisations I am involved in.
Understandably, this year lots of governor time has been taken up by pandemic related support and discussion. This school year has been undoubtedly tough for everyone. As governors we have had an insight into the difficulties of running a school in an ever-changing pandemic and it hasn’t been easy by any stretch of the imagination. We would like to thank each and every member of staff at KG for getting the children and their families through this time; the work everyone has put in during this time has been absolutely phenomenal. We would also like to extend a special thanks to Mr Hyde, Ms, Magee and Mr Clark, who have led the school with calm heads amongst constantly evolving circumstances. We are very lucky to have them! We hope that all staff manage to have a summer of rest and relaxation.
Moving into 2021/22 we will be prioritising Race Equality and engagement with parents and carers, as well as the ongoing subjects of achievement, budgets, community, well-being and curriculum. We will also be holding parent governor elections in the autumn. If you would like to find out more, or have any other questions, please email us on governors@kelvingrove.lewisham.sch.uk
