Headteacher's Message
Our celebration of the 75th anniversary of Windrush comes to a conclusion with our Summer Fair. Through our teaching and the experiences we give all our children we hope to develop in all, an understanding of how the past has shaped the world we live in today. As a school it is right that we celebrate diversity, but also work together to build a cohesive community that stands together against racism.
I am so incredibly proud to be a member of a school community so rich in culture. Each year we seek to shape our topics and resources so that children and families see themselves reflected in every aspect of school life.
There is a busy run up to the end of term. Please keep an eye on the website and texts, as well as the newsletter. We try to get the balance right with communication of dates and events. When unsure we have some amazing office staff who are always willing to help.
Windrush 75th Anniversary
All year groups took part in celebrations for the 75th anniversary of Windrush on Thursday 22nd June.
It was a fun-filled day across the school with children learning about the Windrush generation, making Caribbean inspired smoothies, cooking new dishes, making carnival masks, joining in with dance workshops, learning about new artists and making art.
And at the end of the day many classes came together, dancing to Calypso music, to join Year 3’s carnival extravaganza in the main playground.
Thank you to the Year 3 staff for organising this and a special thank you to Mrs Heron-Njie for all her hard work and planning.
School Council
Last week in School Council we started thinking about active, safe and sustainable travel. We thought about what it was we do as a school and the impact this has on us and our environment. On Clean Air Day we carried out a survey about how children come to school. We discovered that 54% of children walk to school.
We talked about what made it safe for us when walking to school: the barrier at the end of the road making Kelvin Grove a School Street and a car free zone and the importance of the (Lollipop Person), School Crossing Patrol Person. Thank you!
We also discussed other active ways of coming to school and why many children don’t scoot or come on their bikes. Children were concerned that there were not enough spaces to lock up their bikes and scooters securely. We have a big bike and scooter storage shelter on the playground by the main entrance.
If you have any suggestions about improving the number of children who come to school in active ways, please let us know.
This week in School Council we put air quality monitors around the school site. We placed the tubes in contrasting locations so we will be able to see the effects on the air we breathe.
These will monitor the levels of a polluting gas, known as nitrogen dioxide, and will give us an indication of how bad the pollution is around our school.
The tubes have been provided by Asthma + Lung UK. We took part in a similar monitoring project in 2018 so we will be able to see how this has changed over time.
If you see the tubes, please don’t touch them, or move them. We will let you know the results when we receive them.
Achievements
Year 2 have been learning about Kenya in their ‘Near and Far’ topic. Some of the children have been bringing in Maasai shields they made at home and they look fantastic! We are so impressed with their creativity!
Jubilee Books
A big thank you to all the parents and carers who came out to shop and talk books with Eddie Burnett from Jubilee Books. It was great to see so many children enjoying the pleasure of reading. We look forward to welcoming Eddie back again soon.

the Governors
This week we welcomed families of the new Reception intake for 2023/24. We hope this marks the beginning of an enjoyable and rich time for them at Kelvin Grove over the coming years.
Thank you to the KG Circle / PTA for all of their efforts in putting on the Summer Fair. Whilst it may look like a smooth operation (mostly!), there is an enormous amount of work that goes on behind the scenes. We hope the fair is a success and that everyone has a lovely time. All money raised goes to the playground improvement fund. The school council have been working with the PTA & Governors to work out how best to spend the money – watch this space for their ideas.
