Headteacher's Message

A happy New Year to you all. I hope everyone had an enjoyable break, is well rested and ready for the new term.

We have now set dates for parents’ evenings (as below) and we hope to see you all over those two days.

The partnership between home and school is so important for your child’s learning. High attendance, good punctuality, open and trusting lines of communication are key. This term I want us all to focus on supporting children with their reading. If you don’t already, please ensure your child reads with you everyday, take advantage of the school’s access to e-books and the online library, engage with teachers and attend workshops, if you feel you need support. Don’t hesitate to ask.

Reading is the key to success in learning. As a school we are committed to ensuring every child becomes a happy and fluent reader as early as possible.

Parents' Evenings

Parents’ evenings will take place on Tuesday 7^th and Wednesday 8^th February. On Tuesday parents can book time slots between 3.30pm and 7pm and on Wednesday between 3.30pm and 6pm. As we have done in the past, we will be using the online booking system which will be open from 8.30am on 24^th January 2023. We will text you a letter to remind you to make your booking.

Art Competitions

We are entering two art competitions this year: The Fourth Plinth School Awards and The Young Artists Summer Show 2023. This week we have sent home letters regarding each of the above and how your child can enter. If you missed the letters, you can find them below in the letters sent home section. We look forward to receiving your entries.

School Council

In School Council we have been finding out about the traffic on Kirkdale and collecting data to find out how busy the road is at different times in the day, and what this means for us. We are delighted to see that two of our new street trees have been planted on Fransfield Grove. One is a Yellow Magnolia and the other is a Crab Apple called Rudolph, because the fruit looks like red noses. These trees have been carefully chosen so that they not only improve the outlook of the local area, but also because of their carbon capture. In time, these trees will help clean the air which has been polluted by the high traffic volume that goes past our school. Two more trees are going to be planted imminently on Kirkdale. We will be responsible for looking after the trees and watering them, so if you are passionate about trees and able to help us then please let us know.

Club News

Our clubs programme started back today, with lots of pupils’ favourite activities still up for grabs!

We have included a range of clubs for Reception children this term, so please take a look at our timetable and choose a club that will excite and engage your child. Gardening Club and Girls’ Only Football Club are taking a rest this term, and RockSteady will not be taking place here due to logistical difficulties. We also hope to introduce a Coding Club shortly where children will learn Scratch or Python and really build their coding and computing confidence.

Groove School and Piano members are automatically renewed, but please ensure that you have paid your child’s fees from last term on Pay360 / School Clubs.

If you haven’t already signed up for clubs don’t worry, we still have some club options available on Pay360 / Events or contact the school office. All our club details can be found on the website here: Kelvin Grove Clubs

Costume Donations

We are currently looking for donations of second hand costumes for World Book Day. If you have any costumes that are in good condition which you would like to donate, please bring them to the school office.

We are also still accepting donations of Christmas jumpers so please do bring them in if you no longer need them.

Absence Reporting

Please remember to use our online form to report your child absent from school. This can be for sickness or other reasons such as visiting a secondary school or a medical appointment. It’s really easy and saves us and you time. The form can be found under quick links on the home page of the school website or here:

Lost Property

All lost property is stored in the Club Xtra cupboard. Alison Jupp, our Club Xtra Manager, will get the lost property out every couple of weeks for parents to look through and find anything they may have missing. Unnamed and uncollected items will be sent to the local charity shop. Alison will next display the lost property by the pod in the main playground on Friday 13^th January from 3.00pm to 3.30pm.

SIMS Parent

It’s the NEW YEAR and we would like to check that we have the correct contact information for you.

Please register with SIMS Parent where you can access your child’s records and make any necessary changes as and when you need to. Even if you don’t need to make changes, we would greatly appreciate it if you could please still double check the details we have on record for you child, and confirm that no changes need to be made.

We hope everyone had a good festive period, and that you are all now settled back in to the routine of school again after a long break!

Our first governor’s meeting this term will be the Pupils, Parents & Community Committee at the end of January. One of our focuses within this committee is wellbeing, of all of our community. Staff wellbeing is a priority and we will be holding a series of talks/workshops for staff. Hand Stitch & Embroidery

Pencils and Pastels Watercolours

The incredible Lost Crystal Palace

Join us for a wonderful 3 mile walk of the magnificent site, we will see the remains of where this incredible glass palace once stood, also stunning hidden remains of the palace lost within hedgerows and overgrown greenery. A true explorer’s delight! You will see amazing pictures and hear magnificent stories of the lost palace and get a feel for one of the most amazing buildings that ever existed in the world. We have a chance to actually stand upon the site and feel the immense size of the structure and of course, walk by the famous giant dinosaurs built before they know what dinosaurs really looked like, and also see the actual Crystal Place Bowl music stage where Pink Floyd, Bob Marley, Elton John, The Beach Boys, Eric Clapton, Santana, Jimmy Cliff, James Taylor, Elvis Costello, Andy Williams, Desmond Dekker and many more performed.

The walk starts and ends at Crystal Palace Railway Station.
