This week Indigo class have been exploring the Amazon rainforest as we continue to learn about the impact of deforestation. We are developing our mapping skills by using atlases to locate the world’s major tropical rainforests. Here are some interesting facts about deforestation that we have learnt this week…
Did you know that we lose around 10 million hectares of forest every single year? Also, deforestation contributes about 4.8 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide a year. Furthermore, beef is responsible for 41% of global deforestation. Lastly, chocolate, yes chocolate and biscuits are major contributors to deforestation. Shocking, right? But don’t worry we are learning how to use alternative materials so that we can preserve our precious ecosystems.
As part of our science topic, we are focusing on plants and have planted seeds, we have a variety of fruits and herbs growing in our class room. Our plants include sweet corn, peas, strawberry and tomatoes. We look forward to harvesting from our plants in the summer.
