The new half term began with our new topic launch ‘Windrush’ During our launch day, we learnt about the Empire Windrush’ journey from the Caribbean to Tilbury Docks in 1948. We then got into role as passengers travelling on the Windrush dressed in our finest clothes. We each had a ticket to board. Some of us were stowaways! In geography, we used atlases to locate and label the Caribbean countries where passengers boarded the ship.
We are reading Floella Benjamin’s autobiography, ‘Coming to England’ in English this term. Floella came to England from Trinidad in 1960 and this week we are writing a diary entry as her, recounting her time on board the ship.
In science, we have been learning about friction. We carried out an investigation to find out which surface had the least friction and would be best for a skateboard. We tested 5 different surfaces using a ramp, a car and a ruler to test how high the ramp needed to be before the car moved along it. We concluded that the smoothest surface (baking paper) had the least friction.
In maths, we have been learning about perimeter. We learnt how to measure and calculate the perimeter of different rectangles and compound shapes.
