Dear Parents/Carers of Year 2,
Welcome back to school. We hope that you all had a lovely half term and enjoyed the sunshine. In Year 2, we are looking forward to a busy final term of this academic year. Our learning journey topic this term is ‘Near and Far’ and has a geography focus. The children will be investigating and comparing two contrasting localities: London and Nairobi in Kenya. If you have a globe or atlas at home you could help your child to understand the differences and similarities between the two locations. You might be able to find some useful videos or photos (including aerial photos) on the internet that could help too. We have attached the mind map for this topic as well as some key vocabulary to go through with your child.
Year 2 home learning project for ‘Near and Far’
Can your child design and make a Maasai shield? Help them to research Maasai shields, then to have a go at creating one of their own. They could use recycled materials like cardboard boxes. Please bring completed shields into school as soon as they are finished so that we can share them with the class.
English
Our two core texts this half term will be, ‘Lila and the Secret of Rain’ by David Conway and ‘The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch’ by Ronda and David Armitage.
Reading
We really appreciate your continued support with children’s reading at home. Reading at home with your child every day will enable them to make as much progress as possible before the end of Year 2. Please ensure that your child continues to bring their book bag to school every day.
Maths
In maths this term we will be focusing on recapping the four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and developing our skills and understanding further. We will also be learning about position and direction, as well as learning how to read scales accurately.
We will continue setting weekly maths homework on Mathletics. The homework we set on Mathletics is a consolidation task of the work we have been doing at school and really helps to embed learning. Children’s logins are printed in their reading records.
PSHE/SRE
As part of our ‘Changing Me’ unit of work, the children will be learning about growing from young to old and discussing how their bodies have changed as they’ve grown. They will be learning about the physical differences between girls and boys and will be using the correct name for the parts of the body. They will also discuss different types of touch – some that they like (e.g. hugging) and some that they don’t like (e.g. hitting) and how to express how it makes them feel.
PE on Thursdays
Please send your child to school wearing their PE kit every Thursday. School PE kit consists of trainers or plimsoles, plain black or grey shorts/trousers, a white T-shirt and their red school jumper.
Additional events this term:
Sports Day – Wednesday 12th July
End of term reports – towards the end of term
Transition to Year 3 activities – last week of term
Thank you in advance for your continued support.
