We launched our Geography based topic ‘From Farm to Fork’ with a visit to Surrey Docks Farm. We were fascinated to learn about this working farm and the reasons behind all the animals and plants on the farm. We learnt about the crops that they grow and how wheat is ground to make flour but also the stalks are used to make straw which is used for the animals bedding. After the animals bedding has been mucked out, it goes onto the muck heap and the muck heap decomposes the straw so that it can then be used as compost to add nutrients to the soil so that other crops grow better. We enjoyed smelling different herbs and spices that were grown and because we visited on halloween, we loved seeing all the pumpkins growing. The best bit of the day though was feeding the animals. The pig had had baby piglets and we enjoyed watching them playfighting. The goats were also hilarious and climbing on everything. They were very smelly and they loved it when we fed them oats from our hands.
In Geography we have since been learning about different types of farming in the UK and how different foods are produced. We have also been talking about the different foods we eat and have been researching where in the world our foods are produced or grown and why this might be.
In Science we are learning about animals including humans and we found out about the organs in our body and our digestive system. We even had a go at acting out making our own poo using a sandwich, a bag and a pair of tights! We are now carrying out an investigation about the effect of different liquids on our teeth. We are intrigued to find out what will happen to the eggshells that we have left in the different liquids.
