Lavender Class have been working extremely hard this term. Our topic is ‘Guardians of the Planet’ which has a Geography link with South America and the Amazon Rainforest, and a Science link with plants and animals in their habitats.
During Whole Class Reading, we have been reading the text ‘We are Water Protectors’ where we have learned about the Ojibwe tribe. The women of the Ojibwe tribe are dedicated to protecting our planet’s waters from pollution and climate change. In class we have had many mature discussions about what climate change is and how we can help to take care of our planet for our children, and even our children’s children.
In English, we have just finished writing our own version of ‘The Promise’. It is a narrative about a young girl who lives a very sad life, in a dreary and miserable city. One day, after stealing some acorns she begins to change her outlook on life. She then sets out to change the city into a positive and vibrant place by planting the acorns! We wrote our own versions of the story with a focus on using figurative language to describe the city, and also using subordinating conjunctions to ensure we were using complex sentences in our writing.
We have been busy in Geography using atlases to help us locate and label the human and physical features of South America. Did you know that the Amazon River runs through four countries, and that the Amazon Rainforest covers nine countries? In Science, we have been learning about pollination and seed dispersal. This week we also dissected a plant and labelled all the internal and external parts.
Following our topic theme, in art we will be creating collages of protected animals. So far we have created our own materials for collage using different paper types and different painting techniques. Stay tuned to see how they turn out!
