Year 5 stepped back in time this week during a fascinating local walk through Sydenham, turning their eyes to the streets for clues of World War II bombings. It was a brilliant opportunity to apply their history and observation skills right here in our neighbourhood!
We focused closely on identifying the key architectural features of Victorian houses, noting elements like brickwork patterns, bay windows, and rooflines. We then looked for evidence of change. By spotting the distinct differences between the older, original Victorian terraces and the post-war houses built to replace those destroyed during the Blitz, we were able to make real discoveries about our area’s past.
It was an engaging and very important lesson in how war dramatically shaped the local landscape. Year 5 showed excellent deduction skills, linking historical events to the buildings they see every day. A huge well done to Year 5 for their fantastic fieldwork!
