All classes from Reception to Year 6 enjoyed an unforgettable visit this week from Kent Owl Academy, bringing learning to life in the most exciting way. We met three different species of owl, as well as a stunning kestrel, and it was a truly magical experience to see these remarkable birds up close.
During the session, we learned fascinating facts about owls: how their soft, specially adapted feathers allow them to fly almost silently when hunting; how their large, forward-facing eyes help them see in low light; and how they can rotate their heads up to 270 degrees to scan their surroundings. We listened carefully to their hoots, screeches, and chirps, discovering how each species has its own unique call. One of the highlights was watching a tawny owl glide effortlessly across the hall, demonstrating its incredible wingspan and silent flight. Some very lucky children even had the chance to have an owl fly directly to them! An experience we will never forget!
We also learned about the kestrel’s impressive hunting skills, including its ability to hover mid-air while searching for prey, and how birds of prey play an important role in maintaining balance in the ecosystem.
A huge thank you to Mrs Nandhra-Calow and the KG Circle for organising such a special and memorable experience for everyone. It was an inspiring day that sparked curiosity and excitement about wildlife across the whole school.
