Azure class had a fantastic first week of term. We launched our new topic ‘Classification and Conservation’ with a fun activity – making Top Trump style fact cards about our favourite animals. We included information about each animals appearance, habitat and diet.
In English last week, we focussed on poetry linked to the theme of change. We listened to a poem called ‘Change’ by Karl Nova. It was quite different to other poems we have read because Karl is a spoken word artist and his poems sound like rap or hip-hop. It was great to write our own poems in the same style. We thought about the changes in our lives, in the environment and changes that are part of growing up.
For World Book Week, we have been doing lots of reading in unusual places and finding different ways to enjoy and think about books. We asked questions, explained our thoughts and read with people at home. We have also had the opportunity to make our own mini books and decide what we want to write in them, we designed new costumes for well-known book characters and made dioramas (mini models) to show settings from our favourite books. We have also been writing our very own adventure stories featuring ourselves as the main character. We planned all the elements we needed before writing them, each story had a setting that we had to describe, a helpful character, an object and a keyword that needed to be included.
In maths, we have been learning how to divide 2-digit and 3-digit numbers by 1-digit. We partitioned the numbers into multiples of the divider to help us and then used the correct notation to show remainders. It was tricky but we worked really hard and we know we’ll get a chance to do more times tables and division work when we are back at school.
It has been a fun week so far. We have enjoyed the masked reader challenges and we had a fun book week zoom meeting in fancy dress. In the meeting, we guessed each other’s costumes and did a book quiz! It was nice to see all of our friends and we are looking forward to seeing all our friends in person next week!
