Indigo Class are loving this term’s topic ‘Out of this World’! We have been asking so many questions about space and time and thinking deeply about what might be beyond our own world! In our guided reading sessions, we are enjoying learning about the history and politics of space travel through reading ‘The Race to Space’ by Clive Gifford. We have also learnt about the history of astronomy by researching about famous astronomers and placing them on a timeline from Hipparchus (190 – 120 BC) to Albert Einstein (1879 – 1955). In science we have looked at how the Earth’s rotation causes day and night and we have described the movements of the Earth and Moon within our solar system and what a year, month and day means.
In our English lessons we have been studying ‘The Watertower’ by Gary Crew looking at how author’s create tension and build suspense. We are beginning to write our own suspense stories inspired by the text and including a ‘forbidden’ place. In maths we are building on our fraction knowledge to support our work on calculating decimals.
Finally, we have begun to consider the complexities of designing and constructing a Mars rover. We have thought carefully about how to design our own rovers and what we will need to incorporate into our plans to ensure our rovers can travel safely over a surface. It will be exciting to see how they work at the end of our project!
