Year 6 have had a great first day of school! In the morning, we discussed what our hopes and aspirations are for our final year of primary school. Hopefully, we will be able to take on a bigger leadership role across the school and are looking forward to our increased responsibilities. We also learned about our new school values (self improvement, compassion, building community, health and well-being) and have started collecting tokens when we demonstrate one of them in class or on the playground. These are then collected in our class jar and when it’s full we will have a treat to celebrate our class community.
We then spent the rest of the day launching our first topic, ‘The Mysterious Maya’. We learned that the Maya were an ancient civilisation from central America. They had some things in common with us, such as the food they ate, but they also were very different. We practised writing in the glyphs that they used and created numbers using their base 20 system. Our favourite part though was definitely making Maya hot chocolate with cinnamon and cayenne pepper! Over the rest of the term we will be learning more about the Maya and trying to answer the question ‘What made the Maya so mysterious?’
