Over the past few weeks, the children in Year 3 have been learning about the Windrush Generation. We’ve role played what it might have been like to migrate from one country to the next with a small suitcase. We’ve discussed what life was like in the Caribbean through reading about the experience of Floella Benjamin in ‘Coming to England’.
Last Friday, we were fortunate enough to come together with the rest of the school to celebrate Windrush Day 2023. This year was extra special because it marked the 75th anniversary of the arrival of the first of many ships that travelled from the Caribbean over to the UK from 1948-1972.
On the day, the children enjoyed designing their own headdresses which we later used in our carnival in the playground. We enjoyed parading around the school dancing to Calypso music and were thrilled by how many classes joined in! At lunchtime, the kitchen staff made a lovely Caribbean inspired meal which was absolutely delicious!
We had the most wonderful day!
