Year 6 had an absolute blast visiting Queen Mary University’s Centre of the Cell to launch their science driven topic this term ‘Pump It Up!’ All classes had an interesting presentation on the circulatory system and we got to participate in the lecture as blood cells and different organs! We learnt so many new things about how blood cells travel the body and help get oxygen to our organs, and we even learnt that humans share similarities with pigs! They are the only animal with a heart closest to ours. We also learnt about animals that are very different, like jelly fish – did you know they have no heart, bones or blood and are around 95% water! Amazing!
We were also able to play interactive games about cell biology, many of them based on the research from Queen Mary’s own scientists working in the laboratories below the STEM Pod. It was amazing to meet one of the scientists and see their labs as we walked through the building. The videos we saw inside the pod were informative and we even got to see real specimens from the Pathology Museum – there was an actual human brain!
It was a fantastic day and we can’t wait to delve into this topic further this term.
