It’s been a brilliant and busy few weeks for Copper class.
We launched our topic this term, ‘Pump It Up’ with an amazing trip to the Centre of the Cell at Queen Mary’s University, London. We played interactive games, had a lecture and learnt lots of interesting facts about the cells in our bodies. This was a fantastic opportunity for us to meet real scientists and researchers who introduced us to the circulatory system, which we will be learning more about this term. It was a great day out!
In English this term, we have been studying how short films and writers build suspense. The children have enjoyed looking at how the mood changes throughout the short film ‘Francis’. We have created mood graphs to examine where we would need to use suspense-building techniques in our writing; I must say these look fantastic! Today we analysed the character of Francis herself to see what characteristics we could draw out from the film.
In art, we have started our ‘Take One Artist’ project and looked at Helen Frankenthaler, who is an American abstract expressionist artist. We experimented using her techniques and styles which was really fun! Her techniques include: loose brushstrokes, washes, splashes and drips. We looked at different ways we could use the brushes and watercolour to mimic some of her pieces of art. The children have thoroughly enjoyed expressing themselves through the medium of art and we discussed how each piece by Frankenthaler made us feel.
In PE this term we have been doing Hockey with Mr Gibbs. We have been refreshing our skills controlling the ball, keeping possession and passing to each other. With our partners today we practiced individual defense and intercepting passes to score. We are excited to be building up to play whole matches soon!
With our homework project due date on ‘The Mysterious Maya’ soon approaching, the children have been bringing in some fantastic and creative pieces of art. From Mayan hot chocolate and brownie recipes to carefully crafted Mayan masks, the work has been incredible. It’s been great to see children retain so much from their previous topic.
