What a fabulous term Jade Class are having so far! We launched our new topic ‘Light Fantastic’ with a range of activities based around light, our favourite was making shadow hand puppets! It was so fun and we really mastered lots of the formations to make shadow animals. In science we investigated the reflectiveness of different materials are designing a jacket or bookbag for school children who walk home when it’s dark.
In maths we are using the column method to add 2 and 3 digit numbers with regrouping. Regrouping has been tricky but we have been very resilient and are making great progress! This week we have used counters and ten frames to help us. We have also been completing assessments in reading and maths to see our progress and next steps in learning.
Our writing in English this term has been based on a short animation called Charly and Bob-E. The animation is about a young inventor called Charly and her robot assistant Bob-e. In the film Charly is trying to build a new eco-friendly generator and it is not quite going to plan. Her process get’s quite messy and noisy which makes her neighbours unhappy. We have been writing a letter of complaint from the point of view of Charly’s neighbours, as I bet you can imagine this kind of inventing is very disruptive!
In art we have begun our whole school ‘Take One Artist’ project on Helen Frankenthaler. She is an American abstract painter. This week we looked at her style of painting, which is very free and quite messy! We looked closely at her artworks and explored making similar marks using watercolours. We are looking forward to learning more abstract techniques next week and what it means to take a line for a walk!
