Year 5 launched their new topic with a creative clay sculpture lesson making canopic jars. After shaping the clay into cylinders, the children carefully sculpted detailed lids inspired by the heads of the sons of the god Horus.
Did you know? Canopic jars were used in Ancient Egypt to store and protect organs during mummification. Each jar represented one of the four sons of Horus:
• Hapi the baboon protected the lungs
• Qebehsenuef the falcon guarded the intestines
• Duamutef the jackal protected the stomach
• Imsety the human protected the liver
Many children chose to sculpt Duamutef, though some challenged themselves to try the others too!
