We have had great fun with our learning in Saffron class over the past couple of weeks. We have enjoyed our new topic ‘Near and Far’, learning more about Kenya and comparing it to the UK. In Art we made necklaces in the style of the famous Maasai jewellery, and created Tingatinga style animal silhouettes. At the beginning of term in English we got into the character of Lila from our book ‘The Secret of Rain’ with some role play, and now we are learning about the Nobel Prize winning Kenyan environmentalist, Wangari Maathai, who started a movement that planted over 30 million trees all over Africa. We got in role by going to our school garden, talking about plants we recognised (we loved the smell of rosemary!) and, finally, hugging a tree and thanking them for everything they do for us!
In computing we have loved coding on Scratch Jnr, creating our own ‘sprites’ and then putting together a series of instructions for them. Best of all was our day at London Southbank for our Geography school trip. We were so excited to see the famous London landmarks we have talked about over the year, spot different forms of transport and undertake our Geography surveys, comparing and contrasting Borough Market and Bankside pier with Sydenham and Kelvin Grove.
The cherry on the top was our ‘Take One Artist’ week, looking at the famous Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, who loves spots. We really enjoyed putting together a double-page spread on what we had learned about her life and her art, and then we created our 3D spotty dog sculptures in her style. They were all so cute – and will be coming home soon!
