In Amber Class we have been learning all about toys. We launched our topic with a visit to the Horniman Museum and we learnt about toys old and new from all around the world. We brought in our own favourite toys and shared them with the class. We talked about why the toys were special to us, when we got them and whether there was a special reason. Ezra brought in an LOL doll which her mum bought her for being good at the opticians. Aurora got a toy dog from when she went on holiday to Jamaica. Chino likes his Mickey Mouse because it glows in the dark. Ottilie got a toy lion from when she saw a lion show at the theatre. Joe brought in a set of 101 games which he likes to play with his dad. Milo brought in a story telling radio which tells stories in French.
We have now started finding out about old toys and comparing them with new toys. We looked at some old toys and we talked about how you would play with them, what they are made of and how you can tell whether a toy is old or new. We talked about how the old and new toys were similar and how they are different to each other and how old toys are similar and different to the toys we play with today. We realised that new toys are made out of different coloured plastics and old toys were made out of metal. We noticed that old toys still moved but they were wind up whereas now we press a button and electrics will make a toy go.
We are really interested in the toys people used to play with. Can you send us a photo and a message about your favourite toy when you were little or tell us about an old toy? You can email us year1@kelvingrove.lewisham.sch.uk
