In English lessons, the children in Cinnamon Class have been reading the story, Lila and the Secret of Rain, which is set in Kenya. In the story, Lila climbs up a mountain to ask the sun to stop shining and the rain to fall. She has to tell the sky the saddest things she knows to make it weep. Because we have had so much rain here in England lately, last Friday we walked to the top of the hill in front of the Horniman Museum to ask the sky to stop raining and the sun to shine! We had to tell the sky the happiest things that we knew. Our happiest things ranged from having fun at birthday parties to welcoming new baby siblings into our families. It worked! The sun came out as we walked back to school……..and it still seems to be shining!
The trip also gave us an opportunity to do some geography fieldwork. After visiting the hilltop at the Horniman, the children walked back through Forest Hill to look at the physical and human features in our local area. They spotted a range of human features but not too many physical features. It’s very different here compared to Lila’s local area in rural Kenya.
During the trip, the children were lucky enough to have time to pop into Forest Hill library and borrow a book each. They have been enjoying reading and sharing their library books at school.
